Hipped ROOF

The hipped roof comprised of all the walls been built up to the same level. The end of the roof is then inclined in to meet the A-Frames. A hipped roof almost curves around the end wall and it has four sloping sides (front, back and the two ends).
Gable end roof

The gable-ended roof has two pitches that rise to the central ridge (back and front) with each end wall rising to an apex. The gable-ended roof is more common throughout the west and North West of Ireland where the gable provides an anchor to tie the thatch down. A hipped roof is considered to have a better water proofing qualities than a gable but less robust against winds. The hipped roof is typical of the southeast of Ireland. However there is a considerable overlap of both types.
